What?! Sushi Fukyo that’s What!

fukyu_sushiThat’s right! Sushi Fukyo. Talk about sushi with attitude. I mean where else can you get a Big Black Cod, Suzi B’s favorite item on the menu? Plus, this restaurant had a very fun yet familiar theme, Japanese monsters…there were posters and even small statues around the restaurant with godzilla on them. The restaurant is a little complicated to get to, because if you are headed south on Sepulveda and you miss the small street that leads to the parking behind the restaurant, the next turn will take you right on the 405 freeway headed north! Overall though, the dishes were good and very reasonable, although you get what you pay for with smaller portions. Regardless the fish was fresh and the atmosphere quite enjoyable.

Our Favorites

Sashimi Platter
The fish pieces were small in size but big in flavor. Nice assortment of standard fish: tuna, salmon, albacore and yellowtail. As an added bonus, the dish came with BOTH miso soup and small side salad. This was perfect for sharing. Simple and delicious.

Oh My God Roll
OMG! was this good! This was purely on the recommendation of our server. I can’t remember what was in it, but whatever it was, we were tempted to order seconds. (We didn’t though since it seemed to make more sense to try other dishes.)

Dragon Roll
This roll definitively had the best presentation we have seen so far! It really really looked like a dragon! It’s hard to tell in the pictures, but it looked like a Japanese dragon, like the ones you see on a tattoo. Also impressive was the ring of “fire” or sauce around the plate.

Baked Black Cod
What can we say? This dish was probably more fun to joke around with the name than anything else. I mean, it was good but more importantly, took us to that dark place in our minds!

Red Wine Infused Strawberries w/Ice Cream and Mango
YUMMY! First of all, I have to say I love mangos. But regardless of that, this was such a nice and original combination of dessert flavors. The only thing that made it better was combining the sauce on the molton chocolate cake that was on the dessert sampler.

(We had lots of favorites because we were able to order lots of dishes!)

Points of Interest

Reasonably Priced
For good sushi at a reasonable price, Sushi Fukyo is a good option. Keep in mind though, that the portions are smaller. It is still a good option if you want to explore more the sushi world has to offer without denting your wallet (too bad).

Bizarre Japanese Superhero Theme
Personally, I appreciate the effort that goes into creating a theme. Seeing fans on the walls and traditional Japanese prints is so typical. At Sushi Fukyo, the Japanese monster them is original, entertaining and just light hearted.

Good Dessert Menu
For a Japanese restaurant, the dessert menu had lots of options beyond the typical “green tea ice cream” and “tempura ice cream”. The options all sounded so good that we felt compelled to try two – and that was after much debate as to which two to try. In other words, save room for dessert at this sushi restaurant.
